Rubella (German Measles):- Caused by rubella virus; generally mild illness in adults - DANGEROUS in pregnancy: Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS) causes cataracts, deafness, congenital heart defects, microcephaly, and intellectual disability - First trimester infection carries highest CRS risk (~85%) Why postpartum vaccination? - Rubella vaccination is part of MMR (Measles-Mumps-Rubella) vaccine - MMR is a LIVE attenuated vaccine — CONTRAINDICATED in pregnancy (theoretical risk of congenital infection) - Postpartum period is the ideal time to vaccinate seronegative women Screening: Rubella immunity status is routinely checked at first prenatal visit (rubella IgG antibody titer). If non-immune → vaccinate postpartum.
