School Health

A school is both a learning environment and a point of healthcare access. School health nursing combines health promotion, prevention, acute assessment, chronic-condition management, family education, and coordination with the healthcare system. The nurse may be evaluating a minor complaint, identifying a previously unrecognized vision problem, or responding to a life-threatening asthma or allergy emergency within the same shift. An Individualized Healthcare Plan (IHP) converts a student’s medical needs into specific school actions: baseline findings, permitted activities, medication instructions, emergency signs, response steps, contacts, and follow-up. A Section 504 plan or Individualized Education Program (IEP) may provide educational accommodations or related services. These plans should align with the IHP, but an educational plan does not replace a current nursing plan or an authorized medical order. In the United States, the LVN/LPN follows the state nurse practice act, district policy, assigned supervisory structure, and the student’s authorized plan. The nurse performs care within competence, verifies unclear orders rather than improvising, documents the response, and escalates findings that exceed the assigned role or the student’s expected baseline.
