NCLEX-PN
Public health nursing asks, “What pattern is affecting this population, and what can change the conditions producing it?” rather than limiting care to the person in front of the nurse. A community may be a school, neighborhood, workplace, or group linked by exposure or access. The nurse combines surveillance and community assessment with partnership, prevention, health protection, and advocacy. Individual teaching remains useful, but its success is judged partly by whether it lowers risk across the population and narrows inequities. In the United States, the 10 Essential Public Health Services provide a practice framework; reporting duties and emergency powers come from applicable state, tribal, territorial, and local requirements. This distinction prevents a common error: treating public health as a list of screenings instead of a cycle of assessment, action, evaluation, and revision.
