NCLEX-PN
Positioning is a clinical intervention, not merely a matter of comfort. A change in posture can alter airway alignment, ventilation, circulation, pressure distribution, joint stress, and the pull on tubes or drains. Body mechanics applies the same deliberate risk assessment to the caregiver: the goal is to reduce force, awkward posture, and unexpected loading rather than rely on strength or technique alone. The safest sequence is to assess, select the least-force method, prepare the environment, coordinate the movement, and reassess the patient afterward. Manual lifting should be avoided when a mechanical lift, transfer aid, additional trained staff, or another engineering control can accomplish the task more safely. The LVN/LPN performs or reinforces these activities within state scope, employer policy, and documented training, and reports a need for equipment or assistance when the planned movement exceeds available resources.
