NCLEX-PN
Nutrition support is a physiologic intervention, not merely a way to deliver calories. The route changes gut integrity, infection risk, fluid and electrolyte exposure, medication absorption, and aspiration risk. When the gastrointestinal tract works and can be reached safely, enteral nutrition usually protects the intestinal mucosa and causes fewer infectious complications than parenteral nutrition. The practical nurse therefore follows a sequence: identify nutrition risk, establish whether enteral access is appropriate, verify tube placement, administer formula and medications safely, assess tolerance, and recognize complications early. A patient who cannot eat may need feeding, but a patient with a misplaced tube, unstable circulation, or evolving refeeding syndrome needs stabilization and escalation before nutrition is advanced.
