NCLEX-PN
A cardiac diet is not a ban on one food and not automatically a rigid fluid restriction. It is a sustainable eating pattern that supports blood pressure, lipid, glucose, and weight control over time. When a patient is told to eat heart healthy, translate the broad instruction into practical choices: more vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, nuts, fish, and minimally processed foods; less sodium, added sugar, saturated fat, trans fat, and highly processed food. DASH and Mediterranean-type patterns provide useful models. The diagnosis and medication list still determine the safe version of the plan. Hypertension, heart failure, chronic kidney disease, and anticoagulant therapy create different dietary priorities and safety checks. Within the prescribed plan and facility policy, the LVN/LPN reinforces food and label choices, assesses barriers, uses teach-back, observes for symptom or weight changes, and reports findings that require provider or dietitian review.
