NCLEX-RN
Small bowel obstruction is commonly related to adhesions, hernia, tumor, inflammatory stricture, volvulus, gallstone ileus, or intussusception. Large bowel obstruction is often related to malignancy, volvulus, stricture, fecal impaction, hernia, or pseudo-obstruction. Proximal bowel fills with gas, fluid, and secretions. Vomiting, third spacing, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and renal injury can follow. Strangulation means blood flow is compromised and requires urgent escalation. For NCLEX-RN (Canada), items rarely announce the topic in the first sentence. Anchor to objective data, trajectory, and the safest next step for the role named in the scenario before incorrect options compete.
