A vaccine schedule is a risk-timing plan, not a list of dates to memorize. It places protection before predictable exposure or vulnerability, while allowing enough time for the immune system to develop and strengthen its response. Primary doses introduce the antigen and build an initial response. Later doses or boosters reinforce immune memory when protection may be incomplete, declining, or needed again because the child has entered a new developmental stage. This is why a missed appointment usually changes the timing of the next dose rather than eliminating the need for the series. Vaccines produce active immunity: the recipient makes antibodies and immune memory. Nirsevimab is different. It is a long-acting monoclonal antibody that provides passive RSV protection without asking the infant to generate the primary immune response. Passive protection is useful when an infant is entering RSV season before a vaccine-based response would be reliable, but it is product-specific and does not replace the routine childhood series.
