Overview

What Epidemiology Asks

Epidemiology examines the distribution and determinants of health related events in populations.

Epidemiology examines the distribution and determinants of health-related events in populations. Distribution asks who is affected, where cases occur, and when they develop. Determinants ask why the pattern exists: an infectious exposure, a host susceptibility, a workplace hazard, housing conditions, access to care, or another factor. This population view complements—not replaces—individual nursing assessment. A patient may need hydration assessment and symptom management, while the pattern of similar illness among several residents may require surveillance and public health action. Descriptive epidemiology organizes information by person, place, and time. Analytic epidemiology compares exposures and outcomes to investigate possible causes. Counts alone can mislead: a large city may have more cases simply because it has more residents. A rate relates the cases to the population at risk, allowing more meaningful comparison between communities or groups.
