The umbilical cord connects the fetus to the placenta, measuring approximately 50–60 cm in length and 1–2 cm in diameter at term.
The umbilical cord connects the fetus to the placenta, measuring approximately 50–60 cm in length and 1–2 cm in diameter at term. It contains three vessels: two umbilical arteries (carry deoxygenated blood and waste from fetus to placenta) and one umbilical vein (carries oxygenated, nutrient-rich blood from placenta to fetus). The vessels are embedded in Wharton's jelly (gelatinous connective tissue) which cushions and protects them. Covered by amnion.
