NCLEX-RN
Antibiotic questions test more than recognition of a drug name. The nurse must connect the suspected infection, the antibiotic’s mechanism, the patient’s allergy history, renal function, current medications, and the response after administration. The safest choice depends on what the patient actually experienced, not merely on an allergy label in the chart. The RN-level judgment is deciding whether a reported reaction represents intolerance, a possible immediate hypersensitivity reaction, or a severe delayed immune reaction. That interpretation changes whether the drug is administered, held for clarification, or treated as an emergency. It also determines whether a related antibiotic may be reasonable. A patient with nausea after penicillin is not managed like a patient who developed wheezing and hypotension after the same drug.
