A prenatal rubella IgG result may be only one line in the chart, but it changes the discharge plan. A patient who is non-immune has no reliable protection for a future pregnancy, when rubella infection can injure the developing fetus even if the mother has mild or no symptoms. The timing creates the clinical opportunity: MMR is a live attenuated vaccine and is not given routinely during pregnancy, but after delivery the patient is no longer pregnant. The nurse separates three questions: Is she non-immune? Does she have a contraindication or a reason the response may be reduced? What does she need to do during the 4 weeks after vaccination? Breastfeeding does not block vaccination. The administration checklist below turns that reasoning into a safe discharge action.
