The hepatojugular reflux maneuver is more accurately called the abdominojugular test. Abdominal pressure briefly shifts venous blood from the splanchnic reservoir into the thorax, allowing the nurse to observe how the right heart handles an induced increase in preload. A brief jugular venous pressure (JVP) rise is expected; persistence is the clinically meaningful finding.
