Electrolyte and Renal-Function Interpretation

The basic metabolic panel is the second most common test an RN reviews, and it drives more immediate nursing decisions than any other. Potassium determines whether a medication is safe to give. Sodium determines how fast fluids may be corrected. Creatinine and eGFR determine whether a drug dose is safe at all. The electrolytes and renal-function markers together because they are physiologically inseparable: the kidney is the organ that regulates almost every value on the panel, so renal impairment distorts all of them at once. Acid–base interpretation is treated separately in the ABG progression; this lesson refers to it but does not repeat the algorithm. RN scope note. The RN interprets these results to prioritise assessment, apply hold parameters, protect the patient from unsafe correction rates, and escalate. Diagnosis and prescribing remain with the prescriber.
