NCLEX-RN
A hyperextension fall in an older adult with cervical spondylosis can crush the centre of the cervical cord. The resulting central cord syndrome (CCS) is the commonest incomplete cervical spinal cord injury. Its signature is markedly worse strength in the hands and arms than in the legs, while sacral sensation and anal tone are preserved. Recognising that pattern, initiating neuro‑protective measures within minutes, and arranging prompt imaging and possible surgery are the nurse’s first priorities.
