The immune system protects the body from pathogens, abnormal cells, and tissue injury while normally avoiding attack on healthy self tissue.
The immune system protects the body from pathogens, abnormal cells, and tissue injury while normally avoiding attack on healthy self-tissue. Skin, mucous membranes, cilia, stomach acid, and the normal microbiome form the first physical and chemical barriers. When those barriers are breached, immune cells and soluble proteins detect danger, contain it, and begin repair. An immune response is useful only when it is proportionate and eventually resolves. Too little response permits infection or malignancy; too much or misdirected activity produces allergy, autoimmune disease, tissue damage, or shock. This is why the same findings—fever, swelling, fatigue, or an elevated inflammatory marker—must be interpreted with the patient’s history, trajectory, and organ function rather than treated as a diagnosis by themselves. For bedside nursing, the most meaningful question is often: *What has changed from this patient’s baseline, and what does that change threaten first?* A new cough in a healthy adult, a subtle temperature change in a person receiving chemotherapy, and facial swelling after a biologic injection do not carry the same priority.
