The Number Is a Volume Signal
A daily weight is a fluid status measurement, not a routine number to record and forget.

REx-PN
A daily weight is a fluid-status measurement, not a routine number to record and forget. Over a short interval, a rapid increase commonly reflects retained fluid, while a rapid decrease may reflect fluid removal or volume depletion. The pattern becomes clinically useful only when the measurement is standardized and interpreted alongside symptoms, vital signs, urine output, intake and output, respiratory findings, and the prescribed target. The first useful question is not simply, “Is the weight high?” Ask instead: compared with which baseline, measured under what conditions, and accompanied by which clinical change? A patient may be several kilograms above target and still require urgent assessment even before dramatic edema appears. Conversely, one unexpected reading may reflect a different scale, clothing, equipment, or timing rather than a true change in body water.
