Barcode medication administration (BCMA) is a point-of-care safety barrier against wrong-client and wrong-product medication errors. It is not a prescriber, a drug reference, or proof that an order is safe. The nurse must keep the barrier intact while completing the clinical checks that technology cannot perform: identify the client with two person-specific identifiers, match the actual product to the active order, assess whether the medication is suitable, and stop when the system or clinical picture does not make sense. Canada uses a voluntary, organization-driven approach to pharmaceutical barcoding, so a barcode is not guaranteed on every product. A missing or pharmacy-applied barcode is therefore a workflow condition to resolve—not a reason to invent a workaround. BCMA reduces risk only when the designed process is followed.
