REx-PN
Blood typing and crossmatching answer different safety questions. Typing identifies the patient’s ABO group and Rh(D) status. An antibody screen looks for unexpected antibodies that could react with donor red cells. A crossmatch then tests the patient’s serum against the specific donor unit selected for transfusion. The most dangerous failure is often not a laboratory error but an identification error: the wrong patient’s specimen, an incorrectly labelled tube, or the wrong unit at the bedside. The nurse therefore treats patient identification, specimen collection, result interpretation, and final product verification as one connected safety process. Canadian RPN authority is province-specific; ordering and testing responsibilities must match the nurse’s registration class, provincial standards, and employer policy.
