Wound irrigation is controlled mechanical cleansing.
Wound irrigation is controlled mechanical cleansing. The fluid stream loosens blood, exudate, and surface contaminants so the wound can be assessed and managed; it does not remove firmly adherent necrotic tissue or correct ischemia, pressure, venous hypertension, or uncontrolled infection. The clinical decision is not simply whether to wash the wound. The clinician selects the fluid, volume, and pressure according to tissue tolerance, contamination, immune status, and wound geometry. An irrigation plan must also fit the NP's provincial scope of practice, individual competence, employer policy, and the client's overall treatment plan.
