CNPLE
Alcohol withdrawal occurs when alcohol exposure falls after the brain has adapted to sustained use. It can progress from autonomic symptoms to seizures or delirium over hours, so a reassuring first set of observations does not end the assessment. Separate two questions: what complications are present now, and how likely is severe withdrawal? The answer determines whether the patient needs hospital or inpatient withdrawal management or can be considered for closely monitored outpatient care. Treat the acute syndrome first; assessment and treatment of alcohol use disorder follow stabilization.
